Many companies responded to the Coronavirus by sending their employees home to work, and conducting meetings by videoconferencing instead of in-person. The technology is here to stay and remains a popular option, even as businesses re-open and bring their staff back to the office. If you’re new to the process, I’d like to share a few tips for preparing for your moment on camera. Also, if you’re shy and can’t imagine being on camera, check out our video guide for shy folks!
Tools:
– Laptop camera & mic
– Cellphone camera & mic
– Videoconferencing software
Lighting:
– Take advantage of sunlight coming in through your windows. Set up so you’re facing the window and the sun lights your face.
– If there’s still a shadow on your face, set up additional lamps on either side of you (but preferably off-screen); your co-workers will want to see your eyes.
– Try not to record under fluorescent lights, they’re not flattering to humans.
Angle for both cellphone and laptop:
– Set the camera so it’s straight on to you, so you’re not looking down or up at it.
– Best positioning is so your eyes are in the upper third and center of the screen.
Audio:
– You should be fine just using your built-in mic for your phone or laptop – you’ll be close enough to the microphones.
– Turn off extraneous noise-makers – fans, TV, radio, nearby conversations, etc. Before you record, you could put on headphones (not ear buds) to really hear what the room itself sounds like.
– Don’t wear noisy jewelry, particularly bracelets.
Delivery:
– Look straight into the camera lens like you’re looking into the eyes of a person (because that’s how it will feel for the viewer).
– Imagine one particular person you’re talking to – someone not too close, like your child, where you might be too casual – and not someone you’re trying to impress, like the CEO, where you might feel self-conscious. You want to be talking comfortably and naturally to someone in between those two extremes.
If you’re doing a pre-recorded presentation and need some help pulling it together, Muddy Creek Studios can help you – and we don’t even need to be in the same room! We can record your session online, add graphics, PowerPoint slides, etc., and post it on the online platform of your choice for you. Take the first step by scheduling a free, online exploration meeting – on Zoom, naturally!
